Colfax, Kansas is a small town located in Bourbon County with a population of just over 300 residents. Despite its size, Colfax has a rich history dating back to the mid-1800s when it was founded as a trading post along the Marmaton River.
One unique fact about Colfax is that it was once home to the first African American settlement in Kansas. The town was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and many former slaves settled in the area after gaining their freedom. Today, Colfax celebrates its diverse heritage with an annual Juneteenth celebration.
Another interesting aspect of Colfax is its connection to the Civil War. The town was the site of a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces in 1861, known as the Battle of Dry Wood Creek. Visitors can still see remnants of the battle at the nearby Dry Wood Creek Battlefield.
Despite its small size, Colfax is a close-knit community with a strong sense of pride in its history. The town is home to several historic buildings, including the Colfax Schoolhouse, which has been preserved as a museum. Visitors to Colfax can experience a piece of Kansas history and learn about the town's unique past.
