Delphos, Kansas is a small town located in Ottawa County with a population of just over 300 residents. Despite its size, Delphos has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s when it was founded as a railroad town. The town was named after the ancient Greek oracle of Delphi, and its streets were laid out in the shape of a cross, with the railroad running through the center.
One unique fact about Delphos is that it is home to the world's largest ball of twine rolled by one man. Francis A. Johnson spent 29 years rolling the twine, which now weighs over 17,000 pounds and stands over 11 feet tall. The ball of twine has become a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over the country.
Delphos is also known for its annual Twine-a-Thon festival, where residents and visitors come together to add to the famous ball of twine. The festival features live music, food vendors, and a twine rolling competition. It is a fun and quirky event that showcases the town's unique history and sense of community.
